Research Paper Format: Fundamental Things To Consider

Writing a research paper may turn out to be a real challenge. First of all, it’s important to keep in mind some fundamental things, such as formatting. Without it, you run the risk of messing things up.

Important Research Paper Format Points

  • Use clean, white 8.5 x 11-inch paper; print on one side only.
  • Use Times New Roman font with a size of 12 pt.
  • Double-space the entire paper.
  • Use 1-inch margins on all sides so that your teacher can write remarks.
  • Number the pages in the upper right corner, making an indent of one and a half inch from the top.
  • Don’t make a title page unless your teacher requests.
  • If there’s no title page in your paper, type your name on the first page, in the upper left corner.
  • Under your name, type your teacher’s name, your course name and the date, one below the other.
  • Don’t make all letters in the title (if you have one) capital.
  • Only the names of people and places should be capitalized. Don’t underline.
  • If you have a title, make it a new page.
  • Place the title in the center.
  • When you mention the names of novels, plays, etc. in your paper, underline them.
  • Put the names of journals, articles and other shorter works in quotation marks.
  • If your research paper is relatively long, make a Table of Contents page to make navigation easier.
  • Never write the whole essay in capital letters.
  • Use paragraphs introducing important parts of your work.
  • Avoid using informal language and swear words.
  • If requested, include an abstract on a separate page.
  • Don’t make it longer than 200 words.
  • Sum up your findings in the abstract. Avoid justifying them.
  • Throughout the paper, use past tense when reporting results and present tense when describing widely known facts.
  • If you have tables, graphs or diagrams in your paper, number them consecutively.
  • Give a title to each figure, table, etc.

The Reference List

In the reference list, you should include all the sources you referred to inside your paper. No matter what the format of your paper is, a reference list is a must. Make sure that your reference list is in alphabetical order by each author’s last name. When referring to the articles, include their titles and the dates of their publication. When listing internet sources, paste the full URL in the resource. In general, make sure to include a lot of information about each source to make it easier for the reader to find it.
